How To Make A Cosmorita

PASSED BY AN ANGEL SANTANDER. Personal tribute to Virginia Maquieira.

In one of the novels of the Discworld series, Terry Pratchett my beloved Klatchian includes a proverb that says "Try not to live in interesting times." But since I do not usually confide in the proverbs, I recognize that many of the last few years I have gone through interesting times. With all these times are of interest, passion, risk and pain.

has been the International University Menéndez Pelayo one of my personal references in these interesting times.

And with it came, I got a breath of freshness. I have this to Virginia as a woman trained to listen assertively, to smile on listening, to give confidence and tear may not wait doubt, pain and secrets. A Virginia woman as a confident, hardworking, consistent and risky, engaged in the task of creating an emotional tie between the University, its UIMP, and the city of Santander. And a woman who knew how to gracefully get out of that commitment, not easy after a long history of silences, absences and parallel lives, and do it for their involvement, because of its proximity. Who could forget the Virginia approached Tuesday queues literary and modified some schemes, giving instructions to a chair to take you to that happy and sweet octogenarian who is Dora, to open up before and people did not have standing to wait so long? How to forget how quickly memorized the names of the usual age, and found a time to greet his feverish activity, hear their interests and lives?

I can not be, I do not want to be, objective in my evocation of Virginia. There have been many hours in his company, speaking of the divine and above all human, sharing a table with exceptional writers and analyzing reality and dreams. Many times you also have shared important moments of my personal history, such Argentina again because the root of becoming exceptional witness to the difficulty of getting the papers and Leo permissions to create three-way River Plate a small fraternity, and also damn interesting time in which the cancer has become the only issue conversation until it was replaced by the terrible absence. That terrible and painful absence in which no matter the distance to Virginia to be forthcoming.

Among his academic vocation, their argument, their courts, their kinds, their research, and its commitment to the project for UIMP Salvador Ordóñez, Virginia elected the first part a few months ago. And a couple of weeks ago we no longer continue as Vice Chancellor, and no longer be part of that intellectual balm entrenched in the summers of La Magdalena. While I'm sure he will return to Cantabria, because it now has a duty to find time for many and sincere friends who left this earth have the opportunity to give back a little of everything he gave us, accompanying her in the discovery of that magic Cantabria our excess personal commitment and work never had time to see.

Yes, I know that the minute people go. But I'm going to miss a lot of Virginia. And to continue to reserve for it a clean and open space in my heart.

All the best of luck, Virginia. And all the love.
